NFL insider tosses out Cowboys' rival as possible future suitor for Dak Prescott

The situation with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took somewhat of a surprising turn on Tuesday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport indicated little progress on an extension, with the team seemingly willing to let the quarterback play out the final year of his contract without a new deal, potentially setting him up to become a free agent following the season.

Assuming this is indeed how things pan out, it has the potential to create one of the most intriguing offseason storylines following the 2024 NFL season. Prescott hitting the open market could leave Dallas in search of a new signal-caller. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it could also lead to a potentially wild outcome where one of the franchise’s biggest rivals opts to make a run at Prescott.

As Schefter highlighted on “The Pat McAfee Show” Tuesday, Prescott could become the 2024-25 “version of Kirk Cousins” where even if Dallas wants him back, one of the many quarterback-needy teams could make a stronger play. And one team Schefter mentioned? The New York Giants.

“Dak, to me, is a really good quarterback. So if and when he becomes a free agent next year, Dallas may want him back, but there might be a quarterback-needy team—the Giants, Panthers, who knows? We could go through the list right now. There’ll be no shortage of suitors for Dak Prescott as a true unrestricted free agent on the open market,” Schefter stated.

Regardless of how Cowboys fans feel about Prescott, it’s hard to envision a scenario that would be more of a nightmare for the fanbase than seeing him leave and sign with the Giants. Whether or not that’s how things pan out remains to be seen, but things for the Cowboys and their star quarterback became much more interesting going forward.
