NFL insider updates job statuses of Giants' Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen

It appears New York Giants co-owner John Mara won't blow things up this winter regardless of how bad things get for his 2-8 team before Week 18 concludes. 

"General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are widely considered by sources inside and outside the building to be safe," NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported about the Giants late Sunday night/early Monday morning. "They'll be able to make the call on the future of the organization this offseason." 

Whispers about Mara's unhappiness grew louder during New York's humiliating 49-17 loss at the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoon as some of his players engaged in animated discussions/arguments on the sideline at AT&T Stadium. 

Last week, Giants safety and team captain Xavier McKinney essentially suggested coaches weren't listening to team leaders during games, and defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale later made it known that he felt it "hurts the locker room [and] it hurts the defensive room when you say something like that." 

Of course, Daboll and company are without starting quarterback Daniel Jones after Jones went down with a season-ending torn ACL two Sundays ago. Jones missed three games earlier in the season because of a neck injury and was sidelined for the final six contests of the 2021 campaign due to a different type of neck problem. 

The Giants reportedly can escape the four-year contract Jones signed this past March as soon as after next season. 

Jonathan Jones added in his story that those running the Giants "have done plenty of homework on the 2024 quarterback draft class, and sources believe New York won't hesitate in choosing a new quarterback if the right one presents himself come April." 

Big Blue ended the weekend holding the rights to the second overall pick in next year's draft that presumably could be used to acquire either USC Trojans star Caleb Williams or Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

As for now, the Giants seemingly will continue to start undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback heading into this Sunday's game at the 4-6 Washington Commanders. As of late Monday morning, oddschecker listed the Giants as 10-point underdogs for that matchup.
