Packers release veteran running back despite injuries at position

The Green Bay Packers announced a curious decision to cut a veteran running back Friday afternoon after they listed AJ Dillon as questionable to play the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Dillon is battling neck and thumb injuries ahead of the team's wild-card game.

Per a statement by the Packers Friday, the team released veteran running back Kenyan Drake from the practice squad in order to make room to sign cornerback David Long Jr..

The Packers have another running back on the practice squad, rookie Ellis Merriweather. If Dillon is inactive Sunday, the Packers will have Aaron Jones, Patrick Taylor and Emanuel Wilson on the 53-man roster available to play the Cowboys.

With Eric Stokes on injured reserve and Jaire Alexander questionable to play after a “freak” injury at practice this week, the Packers needed extra depth in the secondary.
