Patriots’ Kayshon Boutte arrested in Louisiana for sports gambling violations
Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

It’s a tough time for the New England Patriots, as wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was arrested last Thursday, by Louisiana State Police, as a part of an ongoing investigation into illegal sports gaming.

As gambling under the age of 20 is a punishable offense in Lousiaina, Boutte is accused of engaging in gambling using a fraudulent account as a 20-year-old, back during his college football days at LSU. As per the reports, he used the account to place 8,900 bets, dating from April 6, 2022, to May 7, 2023, in which 17 were betted at NCAA football games and around six on LSU.

The total wagers and payouts amount comprised seven hundred thousand dollars, and even used an alias to get around the age limit set of 21 years for bettors. However, the receiver never bet against him.

In a released statement by Louisiana State Police, Boutte is charged with one felony of computer fraud and one misdemeanor of gaming prohibited for individuals below the age of 21. Currently, he was placed in the East Baton Rouge Parish jail on Thursday, and as the case proceeds further, he might have to face more charges.

The offense on Boutte’s part was informed by an online gambling company to law enforcement, which instigated the investigation in the first place. Immediately after his arrest, as the receiver posted the $6,000 bond, he was released.

LSU statement on rookie Kayshon Boutte’s arrest

Rookie Boutte was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft, therefore he may also have to face NFL discipline due to his arrest upon criminal charges, as the draft took place on April 29, 2023 – when he was already involved in the alleged gambling.

According to WAFB, LSU released an official statement regarding Boutte’s arrest. The statement read:

In July 2023, LSU was made aware of allegations regarding a former student-athlete’s improper conduct related to sports gambling while enrolled at the University. Since then, we have fully cooperated with all relevant authorities involved in the investigation and will continue to do so. LSU’s statement read

LSU also confirmed there is no involvement of any other student-athlete in the “prohibited activities.” However, his current NFL team, the Patriots hasn’t made any statement just yet, but the NFL did acknowledge the chargers they were made aware of.
