Ravens sign veteran RB Devonta Freeman to active roster before Week 2 matchup against Chiefs

The Baltimore Ravens are elevating a member of their running back group to the active roster.

After agreeing to a deal to join the franchise's practice squad, the Ravens are signing veteran running back Devonta Freeman to the active roster, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Freeman was not active for Baltimore's 33-27 overtime win against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night. Ty'Son Williams, Latavius Murray and Trenton Cannon handled duties in the backfield during Week 1.

Freeman joined the Ravens following season-ending injuries to J.K. Dobbins, Justice Hill and Gus Edwards. The 29-year-old spent the 2020 campaign with the New York Giants, rushing for 172 yards and a touchdown in five games.

Baltimore also signed Le'Veon Bell to their practice squad earlier this month. It's unclear if he'll be signed to the active roster.

Williams was Baltimore's lead running back on Monday, rushing for 65 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. He also had three catches for 29 yards.

Williams is expected to remain atop the Ravens' depth chart. However, adding Freeman gives John Harbaugh more options to play with entering Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
