Report: Aaron Hernandez’s brother arrested after alleged planned school shootings
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Dennis “D.J.” Hernandez, the elder brother of deceased former NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez, was arrested this week for some disturbing allegations. According to Bristol (Conn.) Police documents obtained by TMZ Sports, there is concern that Hernandez was planning school shootings at UConn, which is his alma mater, and Brown University.

After D.J. missed a court date and was ordered to be rearrested for a brick-throwing incident at ESPN headquarters, the police said he showed signs this month of being “gravely disabled and a danger to society.”

According to the BPD, several people came forward in early July claiming Hernandez had been acting erratically. He sent a text message that allegedly said, “We’re taking lives if s--- isn’t paid up. It’s been years in planning just taking notes, names and locations. They talked their way into this and it’s almost point game.”

Cops wrote in the docs that they were told by a woman claiming to be D.J.’s ex that instead of using her car to go to his scheduled July 7 Court date, he went to Brown and UConn and “went into a number of classrooms and buildings.” Another person told them they believed D.J. had traveled to the campuses in order to plan school shootings.

Police say additionally, D.J. posted messages with threatening language on his social media on July 19. One message went so far as to say: “Will I kill? Absolutely, I’ve warned my enemies so pay up front.”

Upon a judge’s order for his rearrest, authorities made a move to secure him. However, a standoff ensued. After threatening the arresting officers, Hernandez then “began yelling, ‘shoot me,'” while disregarding commands.

After deploying a taser, the cops took Hernandez to a hospital. While there, he continued making threats, specifically saying he would kill “anyone who profited off of his brother Aaron.” He mentioned ESPN, but “not any people,” according to BPD documents.

Awaiting a court date next week, Hernandez is now being held on a $250,000 bond.

Dangerous threats escalate following brick-throwing at ESPN

Hernandez was originally arrested in March for allegedly throwing a brick at ESPN headquarters. The incident occurred on March 23 at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. Police reportedly were asked to perform a wellness check on Hernandez after he said he wanted to “smash out the windows at the State Capital and ESPN.”

Per the report, security at ESPN said an Uber pulled up to the gates at the headquarters. A passenger got out of the vehicle and threw an object onto the grounds.

Police found a brick with a note attached inside a white plastic bag on ESPN’s campus.

“To all media outlets,” police say the note read. “It’s about time you all realeyes the affect media has on all family members. Since you’re a world wide leader maybe you could lead how media and messages are delivered brick by brick. Clean it up!”

He signed the note, “Yours truly, Dennis J. Hernandez.”

Police made contact with Hernandez, who admitted to throwing the brick onto ESPN’s campus. Authorities arrested Hernandez on a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace. Police then released him upon a promise to appear in court.

Brother of late NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez arrested

Dennis J. (D.J.) Hernandez is the older brother of the late Aaron Hernandez. He played college football at UConn from 2004-08. He later worked as a graduate assistant at Iowa before quitting in 2015.

Aaron Hernandez played in the NFL for the New England Patriots from 2010-12 after starring in Urban Meyer’s offense at the University of Florida. Over three seasons, he caught 175 passes for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also had 35 post-season catches with two more touchdowns.

In June 2013, Hernandez received a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd.

A jury found the tight end guilty of murder in the first degree in April 2015. Prison guards found him dead in his prison cell two years later at the young age of 27.

Following Aaron’s murder case, his brother decided to go by his middle name, Jonathan or D.J. Following Aaron’s death in 2017, D.J. wrote a book The Truth About Aaron: My Journey to Understand My Brother.
