San Francisco 49ers Sign Veteran Quarterback
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback problem. The rest of the roster is ready to win a Super Bowl but the one question is the quarterback position. Brock Purdy is recovering from a UCL injury and might not be ready for the 2023 season. Trey Lance is a complete unknown and Sam Darnold is an inconsistent option. It seems the 49ers aren’t convinced about the quarterback room and have signed veteran quarterback Brandon Allen.

San Francisco 49ers Sign Brandon Allen

Allen was a sixth-round pick in 2016 of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent the last three years in Cincinnati backing up Joe Burrow. In three years with the Bengals, Allen made six starts and played in 12 games. He completed 61.5% of his passes for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. Allen is a quality backup quarterback but this brings into question what this team thinks about the quarterback room.

What Does This Mean For The 49ers?

Is Allen there to bring a veteran presence to the room? His time with the Bengals has put him in big games and he can help give good advice to a young room. We have also seen Kyle Shanahan do a lot with very little at the quarterback position. Could he turn to Allen to hold down the fort until Purdy is healthy? If that happens, what happens to Lance? There has never been a Super Bowl contender that has had so many questions about the quarterback position and yet it is foolish to not consider them.

Most likely this is just to bring in a veteran presence. However, with the uncertainty of the room, it wouldn’t shock me if Brandon Allen gets some buzz in the offseason. The San Francisco 49ers have some decisions to make and what they decide could drastically affect the outcome of their season.
