Final Cut Day is always the longest day of the NFL season. Today, hundreds of dreams were killed, but dozens were made. The New York Jets were no different.

26 players were cut today to nail down the final 53. While many were seen from a mile away, Joe Douglas still left Jets fans wondering what the long term plan is.

QB Controversy Ends

First of all was preseason quarterback Chris Streveler, who I had beating out Mike White for the QB3 spot. But, despite outplaying White all preseason, the veteran stayed, and the new kid on the block was kicked to the curb. There’s a thin hope Streveler will clear waiver and land back on the practice squad. But he certainly performed well enough to make another NFL teams quarterback room.

Safeties?

Jason Pinnock and Will Parks were two names in the safety room that has seemingly blown up over the course of the day. Pinnock and Parks had been consistent backup safeties, and both of them dabbled with a few starts, or first team reps. Pinnock was one of the highest graded safeties the Jets had via Pro Football Focus. Robert Saleh expressed serious intent in getting the Pitt product back on the practice squad. This move leaves the Jets short-changed in the safety room, opting for undrafted free agent Tony Adams over the two veteran players. Frankly, Adams didn’t impress me much. But I’m not the general manager, am I?

Mims Makes It

Calvin Jackson Jr was released, making room for Denzel Mims to be the final wide receiver on the roster. After requesting a trade, Saleh and Douglas expressed no interest in moving the Baylor product, despite phone calls from Carolina. Saleh described Mims as one of the 53 best players they had, and he was true to his word.

Light on Linebackers

Hamsah Nasirildeen and DQ Thomas weren’t necessarily surprise cuts, but it leaves New York dangerously thin at linebacker. CJ Mosley and Kwon Alexander have been hurt in recent years. This leaves Quincy Williams to start, and Jamien Sherwood to back up. Much like the now-decimated safety room, moves will be made within the next week to flesh this group out.

Old Dogs or New Tricks?

The last shock cut was young contributor Javelin Guidry, who appeared as a dime corner and special teams player in all 17 games of the Jets season. His preseason wasn’t great, allowing a team-high 9 completions as the closest defender. But the team opted to keep special teams veteran and captain Justin Hardee. The problem is, within the preseason we learned Hardee cannot play cornerback in the NFL. Guidry had more upside, and will likely be claimed off waivers before the Jets can offer him a return.
