TE Albert Okwuegbunam looking to emerge as offensive key for Broncos

Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett hasn't played most of his starters this preseason, but third-year tight end Albert Okwuegbunam has been an exception.

“I think all our tight ends are playing really well -- all those guys,” Hackett said in a post-game news conference Saturday. “But Albert… he needs some reps."

Okwuegbunam has more responsibility on his shoulders this season as he will be the feature tight end for the Broncos after they traded Noah Fant in the Russell Wilson deal. In addition, wide receiver Tim Patrick is out for the season with a tear in his right ACL, opening more opportunities in Denver's passing game. Okwuegbunam exhibited some of his talent against the Bills in the second preseason game, including a 26- yard grab among his four catches.

Hackett wants to use the tight end as much as possible because he has the potential to stretch the field. Okwuegbunam, listed at 6-foot-5, has speed and ability to beat smaller defenders. The key for Okwuegbunam is staying healthy after two injury riddled seasons. His rookie season ended after he suffered a torn right ACL and he missed three games with a hamstring injury in 2021.

If Okwuegbunam stays healthy, he could turn into one of Hackett’s bigger tools in Denver’s passing game.
