For the second time in the past couple of days, a former Texas safety has been signed by the Denver Broncos.
On Sunday it was P.J. Locke , who has been with the Broncos for the entirety of his NFL career getting a new deal, and on Monday it was former Longhorn and Miami Dolphin Brandon Jones. According to a report by Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, Jones and the Broncos agreed upon a three-year deal. According to Schultz, the deal will pay Jones $20M, and have a ceiling of to $22.5M.
Jones was selected in the 2020 NFL Draft in the third round with Pick No. 70 after a successful four years in Austin. This past season with the Dolphins, which ended up being his final season saw him play 16 games, recording 48 total tackles, 1 forced fumble, two interceptions, and also broke up four passes. Over the course of his four seasons, he played in 54 games totaling 238 tackles, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, three interceptions, and nine pass deflections.
He and Locke may have a chance to start alongside each other as the Broncos parted ways with both Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson.
During his time at Texas, Jones was named to the All-Big 12 second team in 2019, and was also honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2018. He battled through injuries during his career, but still played in 46 career games with 35 starts.
He left Texas with 232 total tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, one sack, and three interceptions.
In 2024, he will have a chance to prove himself as one of the best young safeties in the NFL.
