Three players who could fill Steelers' final roster spot

The Steelers have just one spot remaining on their 90-man roster after signing LB Markus Golden and WR Cody Chrest. Here are three players Pittsburgh could decide to fill its last vacancy with.

LB Kwon Alexander

This feels like the obvious one. The Steelers hosted Alexander last week and have a clear need for an athletic linebacker. Pittsburgh signed linebackers Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts in free agency, but Alexander would bring a different type of play to the group.

Alexander, who is still only 28, played in every game for the Jets in 2022 and totaled 69 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He would provide better depth to the position and would instantly improve the defense's coverage ability on the second level.

CB Bryce Callahan

Callahan is the ninth-best remaining free agent, according to NFL.com, after "a resurgent 2022 season with the Chargers playing the slot." That's the exact position the Steelers feel the thinnest at. Pittsburgh signed CB Chandon Sullivan, but after parting ways with CB Arthur Maulet, there doesn't seem to be a plan in case of injury.

The 31-year-old would provide some much-need experience and depth to the room after having a career-high 47 tackles and three interceptions in 2022. Callahan is clearly on the backend of his career but proved he isn't done yet after playing in a career-high 15 games last season.

LB Isaiah Simmons

This would certainly be the boldest pick of the bunch but the Steelers have been "tabbed" as a landing spot for Simmons, who has been subject to trade rumors all spring. Bleacher Report's Joe Tansey believes Pittsburgh should take the "high risk" on Simmons, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal, to shore up its inside linebacker room in 2023.

The 24-year-old would surely do so, posting 258 tackles, 7.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and four interceptions since entering the league in 2020. However, he would likely cost high compensation, whether it be a draft pick, player or combination of the two. General manager Omar Khan has been aggressive in his first full offseason. Maybe he's got one more trick up his sleeve.
