Tony Boselli was part of the NFL’s Golden Age of Left Tackles when luminaries like Walter Jones, Jonathan Ogden, Orlando Pace and Willie Roaf dominated the position. But Tony Boselli dominated the position, too, and now people who never saw him play know.

He just joined all those above in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

That happened after 16 years of waiting, and it brought as much relief as it did joy to Boselli, the first Jacksonville Jaguar elected to Canton. But now that he’s in, just one question: Who’s the tackle he admires most in today’s game?

After all, Boselli remains close to the NFL as a radio analyst, working broadcasts for Westwood One and the Jacksonville Jaguars. So he must have an informed opinion on the subject, right? He does, and he shared it with us on the latest “The Eye Test for Two” podcast.

“My favorite tackle in today’s game,” he said with hesitation, “is Trent Williams.”

Good choice. Williams is a nine-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro and so accomplished at his trade that the San Francisco 49ers last year made him the game’s highest-paid offensive lineman  — signing him to a six-year, $138 million deal.

But none of that matters to Boselli. What does is what happens when Williams steps on the field.

“I love how he plays,” said Boselli. “He’s physical. He has a nastiness. You could play the game differently when I played the game. I mean, you could get a guy down. I would get guys down on the ground and just go maul them. You do that today, and you might get a fine and thrown in jail because of the way the game is officiated.

“But Trent Williams? He presses the envelope. He’s a great pass blocker. He’s big. He’s athletic. But he’s also a really physical run blocker. He finishes guys. He’s my favorite left tackle in the game today.”
