Two Eagles headline potential free-agent additions for Commanders

Positional needs: Quarterback, guard, linebacker

Washington is about to have money problems, and it has nothing to do with the impending debt ceiling. The Commanders have 19 free agents pending and, according to Spotrac.com, just $7,349,246 in cap space to rehaul their last-place roster. Releasing QB Carson Wentz will help, but there's still a lot to do with not a lot of money

Nate Davis, RG, Tennessee Titans

Davis is from Ashburn, Virginia, where the Commanders have their headquarters. He was a high school teammate of Jonathan Allen, the team’s Pro Bowl tackle.

Davis has 54 career starts, including 12 games in 2022 before a late-season ankle injury put him on injured reserve.

He expects to make a full recovery, but the Titans probably can’t keep him. Tennessee is already $23 million over the cap, and even with the injury, Davis can expect about $7.4 million per year. That’s manageable for Washington, which could use him to replace Trai Turner.

Isaac Seumalo, RG, Philadelphia Eagles

If the Commanders can’t bring Davis home, they could stay in the division and bring Seumalo over from the Eagles. He’ll cost more than Davis, but enemy intel never hurts.

The Eagles’ right guard is the second-best interior lineman available, according to Pro Football Focus. The seven-year veteran is often overlooked playing between Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson, but he hasn’t missed a snap this season and has allowed pressure on just 1.8% of pass blocks and no quarterback hits.

T.J. Edwards, LB, Philadelphia Eagles

If Washington can’t pry Seumalo away from its division rival, it can try to get its leading tackler.

Edwards led the Eagles with 159 tackles in 2022, seventh most in the NFL, but Philadelphia needs to get Nakobe Dean, a 2022 third-round pick, on the field. Meanwhile, Washington could lose five linebackers to free agency.

Pro Football Focus gives Edwards its second-best grade (84.4) for off-ball linebackers. The former undrafted free agent could thrive under a defensive mind such as HC Ron Rivera.
