Tyler Lockett opens up about being a virgin, saving himself for marriage
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Tyler Lockett has emerged as one of the best wide receivers in football over the past couple of years, and the Seattle Seahawks star has a unique story he is willing to tell. Like few professional athletes before him, Lockett is a virgin.

Lockett, who has written a book of poetry called “Reflections” that will go on sale next week, discussed his personal life in an appearance on Adam Schefter’s podcast this week. One of the poems in the book revealed that Lockett is a virgin, and the 27-year-old confirmed to Schefter that he has remained committed to not having sex until he is married.

“I have a girlfriend and she understands what I’m about and loves God as well,” Lockett said. “She’s cool with being able to wait until marriage. So, for me, as long as somebody understands what they’re getting into and respects it, that’s all that matters.

“I think this is a healthier way for me to be able to go about that. I listen to my friends and stuff, and they tell me they wish they didn’t do it.”

This isn’t the first time an NFL player has spoken openly about being a virgin. It is known that Tim Tebow is saving himself for marriage, and that was a huge topic of conversation when he first started playing in the NFL. Cornerback Prince Amukamara also said he was saving himself for marriage, and one of his former teammates said he thought getting married and losing his virginity improved Prince’s game.

We all know how macho the culture is in the NFL, so Lockett and others who openly discuss their virginity must be extremely comfortable in their own skin. The former Kansas State star caught 10 touchdown passes last year and is on pace for his first 1,000-yard receiving season this year, so whatever he is doing — or isn’t doing — seems to be working.
