Washington Commanders to add important edge defender as they completely rebuild the pass rush in free agency
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders traded away their best two edge rushers in the middle of last season as the franchise waved the white flag ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. It was paramount that they addressed the position immediately via free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft. Yesterday they added the first piece of the puzzle in former Cowboy, Dorance Armstrong. Today they kicked things off by adding another key edge defender.

According to Diana Russini of the Athletic, the Commanders are to set sign former San Francisco 49ers edge defender, Clelin Ferrell. The deal can become official this Wednesday when NFL free agency kicks off.

Clelin Ferrell will almost certainly be leaned upon in a greater role with the Commanders than he was in San Francisco. Ferrell was more of a rotational weapon a year ago, racking up just four sacks and 30 pressures on just under 300 pass rush snaps. His pressure rate just over 10% isn't elite by any means, but that's a major upgrade over last year for the Commanders.

After the Commanders traded away Montez Sweat and Chase Young they couldn't do a thing via their pass rush, failing to log even one sack in five of their remaining nine games down the stretch. Their edge rushing leader in sacks (outside of Sweat and Young) was Casey Toohill, who only brought pressure on 5% of his pass rush snaps. Just absolutely abysmal.

Clelin Ferrell is sure to be one the most important defensive acquisitions who should easily double the pressure and sack rates of the Commanders best returning edge defenders. This doesn't mean that the team won't be adding even more edge rushing help in the draft, but this is a great step in the right direction to get the defense cooking.
