Week 4 losers: Steelers coaches get schooled, Mac Jones is benched

Not every player, coach and team can shine. With that in mind, let's look at some of the more unremarkable moments and performances from Week 4:

Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff: Going into Sunday Mike Tomlin had a dominant 23-4 record against rookie quarterbacks. That fact did not matter to Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud as he dominated the Steelers highly paid defense to help his team roll to a second straight win. It was a truly embarrassing showing by the Steelers, and especially from their coaching staff.

Mike Tomlin decided to kick a field goal down 17-3 inside the red zone on fourth and short, Matt Canada called a baffling play on fourth-and-one that resulted in starting quarterback Kenny Pickett getting injured, and the Steelers defense was never able to catch up to what the Texans were doing offensively. Pittsburgh was unprepared and outcoached all day.

Ron Rivera, head coach, Washington Commanders: Ron Rivera used to be known as "Riverboat Ron" for his willingness to roll the dice and take big gambles, but he did not display that sort of assertiveness on Sunday when the Commanders scored a touchdown on the final play of regulation. Instead of going for two points and the win, Rivera decided to kick the extra point and play for overtime where his team would end up losing on a Jake Elliott field goal.

Why did he not go for two? Because he thought his offense was "gassed" after the touchdown drive. That is not really a good reason, and it is a poor reflection on his team's conditioning if a 60-yard drive gassed them.

Mac Jones, QB, New England Patriots. It is becoming increasingly clear that Mac Jones is probably not the guy that is going to get the Patriots back to a Super Bowl contending level. He played another dreadful game on Sunday in a 38-3 loss where he handed the Dallas Cowboys 14 points on a fumble that was returned for a touchdown and a dreadful pick six late in the second quarter.

He ended up getting benched for Bailey Zappe. This is year three for Jones in the Patriots offense and if he was going to be the long-term answer you would hope to see some progress at this point. Not only is that not happening, he seems to be regressing from where he was as a rookie.

Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals. Maybe it is the injury, maybe it is the poor play of the offensive line, maybe it is just a bad slump to start the season. Maybe it is all of the above. Whatever the case, something is very clearly wrong with quarterback Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals offense.

For the second time this season they were held without a touchdown in an ugly 27-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans, dropping them to 1-3 on the season.

Burrow was clearly hobbled in last week's Monday night win against the Los Angeles Rams, leading to questions as to why the Bengals were rushing him back if he is not yet 100% from the calf injury he suffered in training camp.

Sunday's game did nothing to silence those questions. Burrow has failed to top 200 yards passing in two of his first four games and is averaging well under six yards per pass attempt. The Bengals have too much invested in him to keep risking further injury like this.

The Chicago Bears, everybody. Even on a day where quarterback Justin Fields showed some early signs of progress with four touchdown passes and 16 consecutive completions, the Bears still managed to mess everything up. The defense blew a 28-7 lead and turned it into a 31-28 loss, polarizing wide receiver Chase Claypool was inactive and told to stay away from the game, and then Fields had two costly turnovers in the second half, including a fumble that resulted in the game-tying touchdown.

Just a dreadful start to the season that has the Bears at 0-4. The only good news is that as of right now they would have the first two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft thanks to the Carolina Panthers' 0-4 start as well.

Desmond Ridder, QB, Atlanta Falcons. After a promising start that saw Ridder and the Atlanta Falcons win back-to-back games, things are quickly unraveling for everybody. Especially Ridder. He had a brutal showing during the London game on Sunday as the Falcons lost, 23-7, to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ridder completed just 19-of-31 passes for only 191 yards and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a Jacksonville touchdown. Ridder and the Falcons offense have generated just 13 points over the past two weeks.

Josh McDaniels, head coach, Las Vegas Raiders. Josh McDaniels might be a strong offensive coordinator, but he is seriously lacking as a head coach in the decision making process. He faced criticism last week for a bizarre decision to kick a field goal late in the game when his team was trailing by a touchdown, and he should face more for a late-game decision on Sunday.

With the Raiders trailing by seven and three minutes to play, they found themselves with a first-and-goal from the three-yard line. Instead of handing the ball to his superstar running back, Josh Jacobs, he decided to put the ball into the hands of a rookie quarterback, Aiden O'Connell, making his first NFL start. It did not go well.

They had time and should not have been in any sort of a rush. Rookie quarterbacks make mistakes in big situations. McDaniels should not have put him in that situation.
