The Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom was nationally recognized as one of the greatest secondaries of all time. Members of the “LOB” include Richard ShermanEarl ThomasKam Chancellor, Brandon Browner,  Byron Maxwell, and Jeremy Lane.

At the start of the 2018 NFL season, only Thomas remained, but in a Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals, he suffered a season-ending broken leg (his second in three seasons), and would eventually sign with the Baltimore Ravens on March 13, 2019, ending the LOB era in Seattle.  Several years have passed since this Superbowl-winning crew dissembled. So what are they up to now?

Richard Sherman (CB)

“Sherm” is currently an NFL free agent after playing 3 years for the 49ers and 1 year with the Buccaneers. Sherman certainly thrived in Seattle where he locked down the left side of the field and had league records for interceptions.  His career is nearly at its end. We saw production from Sherman decline after leaving Seattle. Decline naturally happens with age and slowing down from his prime. Will a team pick up Sherman? We’ll see.

Earl Thomas (FS)

Thomas is currently an NFL free agent.

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas was arrested in May 2022 in his hometown of Orange, Texas, more than two weeks after a warrant was issued following his alleged violation of a court protective order.

Thomas has been out of the league for a few years and is essentially retired. He certainly thrived in Seattle with incredible interceptions, effort, leadership, and heavy hits.

Kam Chancellor (SS)

“Bam Bam Kam” retired in 2019 following complications from a neck injury he suffered two seasons earlier. He was the enforcer on defense. Receivers who caught the ball in the middle of the field would be met by a force that would shake them up and fear running routes in Kam’s direction.

Kam played his entire 7-year career in Seattle. He certainly was a fan favorite with his iconic “bam bam gavel” every time he laid a big hit on someone. Truly a fun player to watch, Kam Chancellor will be one of the greatest strong safeties of all time. There is speculation he could coach for the Seahawks, but nothing has been confirmed.

Brandon Browner (CB)

On December 4, 2018, Browner was sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted murder after pleading no contest. Browner went crushingly from a rising star to inmate. He was a long cornerback who could lay a big hit and defend receivers very well.

It is unfortunate however, how his career ended as he was a potential star whose light went out fairly early.

Byron Maxwell (CB)

Byron Maxwell is a former NFL cornerback.  He was however, forced to retire due to the risk of being paralyzed because the injury never healed as expected.

He replaced Browner and certainly held his own. He thrived as a Seahawk and forced a fumble in Super Bowl 48 against the Denver Broncos.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the Seahawks Legion of Boom is basically out of the league at this point. They all certainly had an amazing run as a defensive secondary. They will forever go down as one of the best secondaries in history.

Looking backward, the 2012-2015 era of the Legion of Boom also happens to be one of the most exciting times to be a Seahawks fan.
