Which NFL teams have revived their once slim playoff hopes?

History says the majority of NFL teams that start their season off on the wrong foot rarely recover in time to salvage their seasons. However, this year, a few teams have started righting the ship early enough that there’s still hope.

Here are four teams who have resurrected their playoff chances after being left for dead early in the season.

Cincinnati Bengals (5-3)

Things looked awfully gloomy early on for the Bengals, who started 1-3 with a banged up Joe Burrow playing some of the worst football of his career. After all, only 13.4% of teams to start 1-3 have ever made the playoffs, and nobody was sure when, or even if, Burrow would look like himself again. Then there was the injury scare with receiver Tee Higgins, who ended up missing just one game with a rib injury.

But since Week 4, Cincinnati has been arguably the NFL’s hottest team, winning four in a row and outscoring opponents 106-68. Burrow has two 300-yard games and 10 touchdowns over that span, and the Bengals have fought their way into the No. 7 seed in the AFC. With a fully healthy Burrow and Higgins, Cincinnati may just give Baltimore a run for its money for the division title.

Cleveland Browns (5-3)

With a 2-2 record and Deshaun Watson missing four straight games, the Browns playoff chances didn’t look promising. However, with P.J. Walker leading the team to wins in two of three games, including an upset over the San Francisco 49ers, the Browns are currently the No. 6 seed in the AFC and just 1.5 games back of the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens.

With its next two games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh, Cleveland really has a chance to help itself before Thanksgiving. After that, five of its next seven games are against teams without a winning record. If Watson remains healthy for the rest of the season, the Browns, who have the No. 2 defense in the NFL, just may be a tough out in the postseason.

Minnesota Vikings (5-4)

There are still plenty of chances for the Vikings’ season to go sideways — especially with Kirk Cousins lost for the year — but the fact that they’re not only still in the playoff hunt but above .500 after a 1-4 start if awfully impressive. While Joshua Dobbs isn’t the passer Cousins is, he showed a lot of promise coming off the bench and leading the Vikings to their fourth straight win. Remember, Dobbs managed that feat after taking zero practice reps and barely learning the playbook after being traded mid-week from Arizona.

Only four of Minnesota’s remaining eight games are against teams with a winning record, and if it gets Justin Jefferson back in the next two weeks, a run at the playoffs isn’t completely out of the question. The Vikings are currently the No. 7 seed in the NFC.

New York Jets (4-4)

When Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury in the season opener, it was clear if the Jets were to have any hope of contending for the playoffs, their defense was going to have to carry them there. That’s exactly what’s happened. After a 1-3 start, New York has won three of its last four while limiting opponents to just 14.8 points and 260 yards of total offense per game.

Zach Wilson has been solid filling in for Rodgers, but the problem the Jets need to fix to make a run down the stretch is scoring enough points to keep up with the top teams in the AFC. Aside from Garrett Wilson, no other receivers can seem to get open, and the team is barely averaging over 100 yards rushing per outing. But with Buffalo’s recent struggles and Miami coming back down to earth, New York is still right in the thick of the playoff race in the AFC.
