Why Eagles HC sees another step forward for Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts took a massive leap forward in his development last season and it was one of the biggest reasons the Philadelphia Eagles were able to make a run to the Super Bowl. Hurts was even able to play his way into the MVP discussion. All of that earned him a massive contract extension this offseason.

What is perhaps even scarier for the rest of the NFC is that his head coach, Nick Sirianni, sees the potential for the former Oklahoma quarterback to take yet another step forward during the 2023 season. 

The big reason why he sees Hurts making another jump?

The fact that the quarterback is, in Sirianni's words, the most-coachable person he has ever been around.

“Jalen may be the most coachable person I’ve ever been around in my life,” Sirianni said at his press conference. “And he’s just always looking to get better. Now, that’s our job as coaches to make sure we’re feeding him good information. He’s so coachable and he just keeps getting better, and he keeps getting better, and he keeps getting better. And so I do, I see another jump in everything that he’s done — with the accuracy, with the decision-making. I mean, we’re doing 7-on-7 so there is no … pass rush except for the people who are walking at him with the bags. … But I do see his development continuing.

Going into the 2022 season Hurts represented the team's biggest wild card. He had shown positive strides in his second season, helping the Eagles make the playoffs, but he was still not a sure thing in terms of being the Eagles' franchise quarterback. 

His ability to continue progressing was always going to be the make-or-break mark for the team. He progressed more than even the most optimistic Eagles fan could have anticipated. 

Hurts finished last season with 3,701 yards passing and 22 touchdowns, against only six interceptions. Along with his 760 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns, he helped the Eagles post a 14-1 record during the regular season when he was able to start. 

The only question surrounding Hurts and the Eagles this upcoming season is how good he might end up being and his true ceiling. In Sirianni's mind, the sky is the limit.
