Will Levis shares what he is most excited for in first NFL preseason game
Mark Zaleski / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

Will Levis hasn’t played in a game of football since Kentucky’s win over Louisville in their regular-season finale back on November 26th of last year. He will make his return to the field this weekend but, this time, as a pro quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.

Levis spoke this week about his excitement for the Titan’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. Tennessee’s rookie quarterback is just ready to see his team’s work from this offseason pay off in front of a crowd.

“Just playing football and seeing just all the hard work we’ve done just come to life,” said Levis. “With a bunch of people watching? It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Levis has made a statement over the course of training camp with a much-improved performance than what he gave back during OTAs. That has started to turn some of the doubters around when it comes to the 33rd pick from this spring’s NFL Draft.

Still, to this point, Levis is only the QB3 in Nashville. Ryan Tannehill looks to be the starter again for Tennessee while, for now, the franchise has Malik Willis above him as their QB2.

Even so, Levis is likely to see a lot of reps over the course of the Titan’s preseason against the Bears, Vikings, and Patriots. That’s why he’s just ready to step out with his team at Soldier Field this weekend to make his debut in the NFL.

Levis showing “command of the huddle” during Titans camp

These next few weeks could be critical in Tennessee Titans’ rookie Will Levis making his case for the role of backup quarterback — and potentially as the full-time starter down the road.

As of Monday, Levis was still listed on the Titans’ website as the third QB on the depth chart. With that said, Levis has been stepping up his game during training camp as of late. His recent run was highlighted by a five-touchdown performance last week.

Mike Vrabel has spotted noticeable progression from the former Kentucky Wildcat. In particular, he mentioned Levis when it comes to stepping up as a respected voice amongst his teammates.

“I’ve seen him make some really good throws. I’ve seen command of the huddle,” Vrabel told reporters on Tuesday. “I think that—just explaining to these quarterbacks that the other 10 players are responsible for your performance. So, you need to make sure that they know where to line up. Sometimes guys make a mistake, a lot of formation. But the quarterback’s job is to make sure that everybody is helping them do their job. It starts with lining up.”

Being a vocal leader is a key trait in any good quarterback. Levis exemplified that well during his two seasons in Lexington. However, doing so at the NFL level is an entirely different ballgame — especially as the new guy. While Vrabel added that there are still things Levis needs to improve upon (like there are with all rookie quarterbacks), he was quick to praise Levis’ willingness to make appropriate adjustments.

“The operation at the line of scrimmage, I think is better. I’ve seen him move receivers into splits that they’re supposed to be in. Throwing with different speeds and layering the football or being able to use his arm talent when he has to and put it in there in tight windows,” Vrabel added. “But again, there’s some other things that have to improve. As he progresses on and seeing out in front of crossers and things like that.”
