Blackhawks Injury Updates: Connor Bedard Skates, Andreas Athanasiou Had Surgery
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Two developments on the Chicago Blackhawks' injury front came to light on Monday. Connor Bedard returned to the ice with specific limitations and it was revealed that Andreas Athanasiou underwent surgery.

Connor Bedard Injury Update

Bedard suffered a fractured jaw resulting from a hit he took in a game on Jan. 5 against the New Jersey Devils. The Blackhawks announced on Jan. 10 that Bedard underwent successful surgery and would be out for 6-8 weeks. NBC Sports Chicago's Charlie Roumeliotis specified that the surgery took place on Jan. 8.

On Monday, Bedard took the ice in a non-contact capacity following Blackhawks' practice. The rookie wore a full cage and was instructed to refrain from taking slapshots to avoid clenching his jaw.

Bedard's 6-8 week recovery timeline remains the same, but he's clearly eager to strike the short end of it. If he's able to do so, Feb. 19 against the Carolina Hurricanes could be a potential return date.

Andreas Athanasiou Injury Update

Athanasiou's status has been a bit of a mystery for the past two months. The speedy winger last played on Nov. 9 against the Tampa Bay Lightning but exited early due to a lower-body injury. It was later revealed that Athanasiou was dealing with a groin injury, but further details were scarce.

On Monday, head coach Luke Richardson said Athanasiou underwent a groin procedure "a little while back," per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times.

However, details remain limited as the Blackhawks didn't provide a return timeline. In the meantime, Athanasiou remains on injured reserve.
