Canucks acquire Filip Hronek from Red Wings for first-, second-round picks

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenseman Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Wings received a conditional 2023 first-round pick (originally acquired by Vancouver in the Bo Horvat trade with the New York Islanders) and Vancouver’s own 2023 second-round pick in the deal.

In addition to Hronek, the Canucks also acquired Detroit’s own 2023 fourth-round pick.

Hronek, 25, has nine goals and 38 points while averaging 21:32 in 60 games with the Red Wings this season. The six-foot, 190-pound right-handed defenseman is under contract at a $4.4M cap hit through the end of the 2023–24 season, at which point he’ll be eligible to become a restricted free agent.

The Red Wings originally selected Hronek in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The Czech defender made his NHL debut with the Red Wings during the 2018–19 season and proceeded to spend parts of five seasons in Detroit, collecting 30 goals and 156 points in 305 games.

The Canucks now possess just one pick — their own — in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft. The Red Wings will receive the Islanders’ 2023 first-round selection unless it ends up falling in the top 12, in which case the pick will transfer to 2024 (without any protections).

With Hronek now part of a defense that also includes Quinn Hughes, Tyler Myers, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Ethan Bear, the Canucks will return to action on March 2 to take on the Minnesota Wild at Rogers Arena.
