Canucks’ Filip Hronek caught on hot mic chriping Flames: ‘You have holidays in two days’
Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek evidently knows perfectly well which teams are heading to the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs — and which ones aren’t.

Of course, the Canucks are locked into the top spot in the Pacific Division and could still catch the Dallas Stars for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. They’ve had a dominant season and are slated to make just their second playoff appearance since 2015.

On the other side of things, the Calgary Flames are nowhere near the playoff picture. The Flames traded pending free agents Tyler Toffoli, Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov, and Elias Lindholm — the latter two to the Canucks — and have seemingly accepted their fate as a lottery team.

The Canucks and Flames met up at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Tuesday for the penultimate game of the regular season for both teams. As tempers started to flare on both sides late in the second period, a camera located between the two benches caught Hronek aiming a pretty ruthless chirp at the Flames’ bench — and the hot mic picked it up, too.

Hronek appeared to be talking to Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson — a renowned trash-talker himself — when he let loose the memorable line: “You have holidays in two days!”

Sick burn! And an accurate one, too — Calgary’s season will indeed come to an end on Thursday after they take to the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome one last time for a tilt against the San Jose Sharks.

The Canucks will wrap up their regular season a little earlier that same day when they visit the Winnipeg Jets at 5:00 p.m. PT. But after that, Hronek will skate in his first-ever Stanley Cup Playoff action as the Canucks do battle against either the Vegas Golden Knights, L.A. Kings, or Nashville Predators in the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Hronek, 26, has five goals and 48 points through 81 games in his first full season with the Canucks after being acquired from the Detroit Red Wings ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. The Czech defender is slated to become a restricted free agent this summer.

The exchange between Hronek and Andersson occurred in the wake of a lively scrum in front of the two benches that included 5’10” Conor Garland taking on 6’8″ Adam Klapka, both of whom were subsequently assessed misconducts.

The Canucks led the Flames by a 3-0 score after two periods of play on Tuesday night.
