Capitals Make Fehervary Qualifying Offer, Contract Talks Ongoing
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary — a restricted free agent this offseason — has received a qualifying offer from the team, Slovak media outlet Nový Čas reported Friday, with negotiations on a contract extension ongoing.

“I think I will stay in Washington,” Fehervary said, according to a DeepL-generated translation. “I already got a qualifying offer and we started talking about a new contract. We’ll see how it goes.”

Fehervary , 23, is expected to be a key piece of the Capitals’ blue line moving into the future alongside Rasmus Sandin.

After making his NHL debut in 2019, Fehervary has blossomed into a fixture of the Capitals’ defense. He has more the second-most blocks (245) of anybody over the past two seasons, in addition to leading the team with 468 hits over the same timespan.

Fehervary, who is the team’s lone RFA after Alex Alexeyev signed a contract extension in May,  is represented by former NHLer Claude Lemieux, according to PuckPedia.
