Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom to step away due to 'ongoing injury situation'

“Given my ongoing injury situation, I decided to take some time and step away from the game,” Backstrom said. “This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time. I want to thank my teammates, the organization, and fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. I ask for privacy at this time as I determine my next steps and viable options moving forward.”

Backstrom was limited to just 86 games between 2021-22 and 2022-23 after dealing with hip injuries. He returned to training camp in September after having hip resurfacing surgery, saying he felt 100 percent ready to go at the time. But early season results showed otherwise. He had just one assist in eight games while struggling to keep up with the pace.

“We stand behind Nicklas and will support him throughout this process. We know first-hand how hard he has worked and how determined he is to get back to full health. Our organization stands fully behind him while he takes his leave of absence from the team and takes time to evaluate his current health situation.”

Backstrom has spent his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals since getting drafted fourth overall in 2006. The 35-year-old has 271 goals and 1,033 points in 1,105 career games, establishing himself as one of the best playmakers in the league. The Swedish center won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018, adding to a career that saw him win silver at the 2014 Olympics and the 2013 Gargarin Cup as KHL champion.

The Capitals sit fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-3-1 record while riding a three-game win streak. Backstrom’s $9.2 million cap hit runs until 2025, but one ha to wonder if he’ll play again after dealing with his injury concerns. According to CapFriendly, the Caps have $89,167 in current cap space, so Backstrom’s hit could give them some extra flexibility.
