Devils Seamus Casey Awarded First-Team All-Big Ten Honors
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

In a season filled with standout performances, New Jersey Devils prospect Seamus Casey’s name has consistently risen to the top. The Devils’ prospect defenseman for the Michigan Wolverines has just been named to first-team All-Big Ten, solidifying his status in collegiate hockey. Joining him on the elite roster are his equally impressive teammates, Gavin Brindley and Rutger McGroarty, marking quite the of triumph for the Wolverines and a testament to their dominance on the ice where current Devil, Luke Hughes, descended from.

Casey (20) has already made waves since being drafted by the Devils. His exceptional skating skills and strategic gameplay have given the Wolverines the presence of a forward on the blue line, and his defending ability is not far behind.

In 37 games this season, Casey nearly doubled his 29 points in the 2022-23 season, netting seven goals and 37 assists for 44 points in 37 contests as the Wolverines top defenseman this season.

Casey also helped Team USA win the gold medal at this winter U20 World Junior Classic, dishing six assists in six games.

If Casey wanted, he could choose to end his NCAA career and join the Devils, likely heading to the Utica Comets for his first taste of professional hockey in North America. However, if/when the Devils are officially eliminated from the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, there’s an outside chance Casey could make his NHL debut with an injury-laden New Jersey blue line.

Casey’s ascension from second-round draft pick to the top prospect in the Devils’ system right now is a net positive for the organization. One could argue the Devils can dangle the 20-year-old defenseman oozing with value for trade to address needs on the NHL roster this summer. Or, the Devils have yet another young weapon in their organization who seemingly has a bright NHL future.
