If Conor Timmins keeps this up, he won’t be going on waivers anytime soon

Anyone else have mixed feelings about Conor Timmins’ four-point night (two goals, two assists) against the Buffalo Sabres in St. Thomas on Wednesday night?

I know I did.

That’s because a big roster decision is looming with respect to the 25-year-old, who in a perfect world, would be Toronto’s No. 7 defenceman.

Right now, Brad Treliving and company probably have three options, and unfortunately, only one involves Timmins being on the opening night roster.

Firstly, I should preface by saying a lot can happen between now and October 11^th when the Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens in the regular season opener. Of note, in related news, John Klingberg was pulled from Wednesday night’s game after he had something “tighten up.” I’m sure we’ll find out more on that front in the next few days.

Assuming full health on the back end, Sheldon Keefe could choose to roll with seven defenders to start the year. Ultimately, all things being equal, Toronto probably has a better shot trying to get the freshly inked Simon Benoit through waivers than they do Timmins. For what it’s worth, I think this is the likeliest scenario.

And this isn’t me overvaluing Timmins either. Not only is he a right-handed shooting defenceman but once upon a time ago, he was a highly touted prospect in Colorado’s system. Simply put, if he goes on waivers, there’s seemingly no question someone would take the plunge and take him on as a reclamation project —at the very least. It only takes one team to have interest.

Meantime, as referenced, the second option would definitely be a risky proposition. That would involve the Leafs putting Timmins on waivers and hoping that he goes unclaimed. Yeah, I don’t know about that.

Lastly, and it’s probably the least likely scenario of the three to potentially play out, but Brad Treliving could elect to explore the trade market for Timmins or another blueliner they have to make room for Timmins. Yup, I can’t see that either.

Having said all that, if the former Coyote continues to perform like he did against Buffalo on Wednesday night, he won’t have to worry about anything. Simply put, the Leafs will have no choice but to make room for him on the roster.
