Jack McBain and Coyotes both submit arbitration filings
Jack McBain Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Coyotes and center Jack McBain have both submitted their filings for their arbitration hearing, with the Coyotes filing for a two-year deal with a $1.2 million cap hit, while McBain is filing for a one-year, $2.25 million contract.

McBain, 23, is a restricted free agent after the conclusion of his two-year, entry-level contract with a $883,750 cap hit. His qualifying offer from that deal is $874,125, so McBain looked to go the route of arbitration to get a new contract. The two parties are scheduled for a hearing on July 30th should they not reach an agreement beforehand.

McBain’s filing would have him paid similarly to Evgenii Dadonov and Philipp Kurashev, with the latter signing his deal after an arbitration filing this summer. The Coyotes filing would have McBain paid similarly to Colin Blackwell.

McBain had a solid rookie season with the Coyotes this year, with 12 goals, 14 assists, and 26 points in 82 games. He also managed to get into 10 games in 2021-22 after concluding his collegiate career at Boston College, and he had two goals, one assist, and three points in that span.

McBain was a third-round draft pick for the Coyotes in the 2018 draft, selecting him with the 63rd overall pick. He was drafted out of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League, where he played with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, and then proceeded to spend four seasons at Boston College before making his NHL debut.

The Coyotes have made a few additions and even spent more money to do so than usually expected from the franchise, bringing in Jason Zucker, Alex Kerfoot, Troy Stetcher, and Travis Dermott. They had also brought back Alex Galchenyuk for what would have been his third stint with the Coyotes, but his contract was terminated shortly after when Galchenyuk was arrested, replacing him with Zach Sanford. The Coyotes still have almost $8.8 million in salary cap space, with their only remaining RFAs being McBain and Jan Jenik.
