While head coach Todd McLellan’s birthday was on Tuesday, he received a late gift from the LA Kings on Thursday.
LA’s been working on an extension with head coach Todd McLellan over the past while. Sounds like it’s getting close. He’s heading into the final season of his original contract with the Kings

According to Elliotte Friedman, the LA Kings and head coach Todd McLellan agreed on a contract extension yesterday afternoon. The contract extension is for one year, as Friedman and David Pagnotta, of The Fourth Period, confirmed.
Believe the extension for McLellan is one year. That would put him in-line with GM Rob Blake, to the end of the 2024-25 season. https://t.co/c3RpcF4jSB

Believe it’s a 1-year extension for McLellan in LA. Told agreement has been in place since early part of summer. https://t.co/lmNcO9mLFp

From the sound of it seems like this extension had been worked out over the summer and didn’t make headlines until now. McLellan is entering the final season of his five-year contract, and this one-year extension keeps him in LA through the 2024-2025 season. McLellan has played a part in the Kings’ turnaround through the rebuild, guiding them to the playoffs the past two seasons. Unfortunately, in both years, the Kings ran into Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and fell to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round.
While the playoff results haven’t been what Kings fans wanted, this extension rewards McLellan for helping steer the Kings back to the playoffs, but with it being one year it can also be looked at as a “prove it in the playoffs” type extension as well. McLellan’s new extension lines him up with general manager Rob Blake, whose contract also expires after the 2024-2025 season.
