Maple Leafs' Wayne Simmonds out six weeks with broken wrist

Toronto Maple Leafs winger Wayne Simmonds scored twice in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks but was also the victim of an unfortunate attempted clearance.

As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Toronto confirmed on Monday that Simmonds will miss roughly six weeks after sustaining a broken wrist on Saturday. The injury occurred in the third period when a dump pass struck his left wrist:

It's brutal timing for both Simmonds and the Maple Leafs, as the 32-year-old had scored five goals across his last six games before the injury. He'll now be sidelined through at least mid-March.

Those five goals are the only points he's recorded this season.

"He's a big loss for us," Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said ahead of Monday's rematch with Vancouver. "He's been playing well, not just with his play, but he brings a lot to our room in a lot of other areas. That certainly will be missed."

Toronto started the midweek atop the North division on 19 points.
