Mark Friedman was the lone absence from the Pittsburgh Penguins final workout in Southern California before heading to San Jose.
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan stated following the practice that Friedman was being evaluated for an upper-body injury.
While Sullivan didn’t supply too many further details, he did say that he doesn’t expect Friedman to play against the Sharks.
There are currently a lot of moving pieces with the Penguins and their active and inactive defensemen.
If Friedman goes down and no other roster moves follow, Chad Ruhwedel will slot his way back into the lineup.
However, Sullivan did provide an update on Jan Rutta who has been listed on long-term injured reserve and can be lifted when the Penguins take on the Sharks.
Sullivan said that Rutta is making progress and they are trying to get him as close to game-ready as possible for his return.
For Rutta to return to the lineup, the Penguins would have to make a number of different personnel moves to fit everything under the salary and roster limit.
It’s likely the Penguins will have to send someone through waivers.
Sullivan also stated that goalie Tristan Jarry may be close to a return and didn’t rule him out in San Jose.
