Penguins vs. Red Wings: Alex Nylander Looking For Role
USA TODAY Sports

The preseason continues for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they take on the Detroit Red Wings. After splitting their split squad contests against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Penguins reduced their training camp roster to 47 players prior to this contest. The team is still in the process of evaluating several positions with just 18 days remaining until their season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. Here's what to watch for as the Penguins battle the Red Wings.

1.) Will Alex Nylander Stand Out Again?

Alex Nylander looked like an NHL regular in the preseason opener. He was a possession master, added a goal, and secured the shootout winner. He’s a serious candidate to earn a third line role with the Penguins or be their first call-up. Another stand out performance would go a long way for the young forward.

2.) Third Pair Defense Remains Crowded

The third defensive pairing for the Pens is a complete mystery. P.O. Joseph and Chad Ruhwedel played a majority of the first preseason matchup and look to spend more time together in this next contest. Meanwhile, camp invite Libor Hajek looked top-six worthy in his debut, and speedster Ty Smith and fiesty Mark Friedman are also battling for an NHL spot. This next game will give all these players a chance to stand out, and hopefully one or two will take advantage of the opportunity.

3.) Nedeljkovic & Blomqvist

Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist will be the tandem in net against the Red Wings. The pair picked up a victory over Columbus and will split time in this next matchup.

Ned saved all 18 shots against him in his Penguins debut. He looks much more confident in Pittsburgh, and needs another solid performance to continue earning the back-up role.

The youngster Blomqvist looked solid despite giving up two goals. He stood tall and looked his best in the shootout to earn the win for the Pensguins.

The Pens and Wings face-off at 7:00pm in Detroit.
