Red Wings Notebook: Sprong Has Shot To Make Difference
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

His Detroit Red Wings teammates like to talk about the incredible ability that Daniel Sprong possesses in his quick-release shot. As the NHL preseason was concluding on Saturday, Sprong put that unique talent on display for all to see.

During Detroit’s 4-3 home-ice victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sprong corralled a bouncing cross-ice pass from Lucas Raymond and in one motion, snapped a shot into the roof of the net behidn Toronto goalie Joseph Woll.

It was Sprong’s fourth goal of the NHL preseason but it was nothing that the other Red Wings haven’t seen time and again.

“I played with him in a 3-on-3 league this summer (in Montreal) and at any moment he can shoot from the corner, shoot from the blueline, shoot from the dots,” Red Wings forward David Perron said. “I think he’s in range all the time to score. He’s got a really quick release, sneaky shot.”

Robby Fabbri is another Detroit player with a long-standing relationship with Sprong.

“His shot is an obvious one,” Fabbri said, listing Sprong’s offensive talents. “But the way he sees the ice offensively and finds the soft areas, it’s easy to play with him. I’ve been watching him play since we were really young. It’s pretty funny to be on a line now, too.”

Fabbri and Sprong first teamed up in a summer league when they were nine years old. Even then, Sprong could snap a puck into the twine with authority.

“He always had a good shot,” Fabbri said. “He’s always had that crazy curve.”

Red Wings Drop Seven More

Detroit was further reducing the club’s training camp roster on Saturday, assigning seven players to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Moving to GR were forwards Austin Czarnik, Tim Gettinger, Taro Hirose and Nolan Stevens, along with defensemen Jared McIsaac, Wyatt Newpower and Brogan Rafferty.
