The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Robert Hagg to a one-year contract carrying an $800,000 cap hit, the club announced Monday.

Hagg, 27, split the 2021–22 season between the Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers, scoring one goal and nine points while averaging 16:01 in 64 games.

The Philadelphia Flyers originally selected Hagg in the second round (No. 41 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. The 6’2″, 204-pound left-handed defenseman spent the first five seasons of his National Hockey League career with the Flyers, scoring 13 goals and 47 points in 236 appearances.

Last July, the Sabres acquired Hagg and two draft picks from the Flyers in exchange for Rasmus Ristolainen. Buffalo moved Hagg, a pending unrestricted free agent, to the contending Panthers for a sixth-round pick at the 2022 trade deadline.

Hagg joins a Red Wings defensive group that already includes Moritz Seider, Ben Chiarot, Filip Hronek, Olli Maatta, Gustav Lindstrom, Jordan Oesterle, Mark Pysyk, Steven Kampfer, RFA Jake Walman and top prospect Simon Edvinsson.

The Red Wings have been extremely active in the 2022 unrestricted free agency period, signing Chiarot, Maatta, Andrew Copp, David Perron, Dominik Kubalik, and now Hagg.
