Report: Flyers make Shayne Gostisbehere available for trade

Shayne Gostisbehere entered the NHL as one of the best young defensemen in 2015. He even came in second for the Calder Trophy that season, but now it appears the Philadelphia Flyers are ready to move on from the 27-year-old in order to get help in other areas.

The Flyers have reportedly made Gostisbehere available in trade discussions this offseason, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.

Gostisbehere has three seasons left on the six-year contract he signed in 2017 that holds an average annual value of $4.25 million. The 27-year-old was limited to 42 games this past season due to injury and frequently being a healthy scratch.

The Florida native tallied 12 points before the season was paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. He added two assists in five playoff games before the Flyers were eliminated in the second round.

Philadelphia has a couple of younger, cheaper options available for the upcoming seasons, and trading Gostisbehere would free up some much-needed cap space. While the club locked up Robert Hagg to a two-year, $3.2 million extension on Monday, they still need space to sign restricted free agents Nolan Patrick and Phillippe Myers.

After the signing of Hagg, the Flyers now have around $6.2 million to spend on their roster for the upcoming season.
