Report: Maple Leafs Had Deal in Place to Acquire Marc-Andre Fleury in 2022, But President Brendan Shanahan 'Vetoed' It

Think about this: Marc-Andre Fleury on the Toronto Maple Leafs. It reportedly almost happened.

According to John Shannon on The Bob McCown Podcast, Toronto had a deal to acquire Fleury from the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022. However, the Maple Leafs' president, Brendan Shanahan, decided against the trade.

"Kyle Dubas had a deal in place to acquire Marc-Andre Fleury. It was done. It was a done deal. They could've had Marc-Andre Fleury from Chicago before he got traded to Minnesota, and Brendan vetoed it...

"But there was a deal in place, and they just needed the rubber stamp endorsement from the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs for it to occur, and it did not occur."

The deal was reportedly Brandon Hagel and Fleury to the Maple Leafs for Petr Mrazek, Matthew Knies, and "first-round picks," according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Dubas wasn't happy that the potential deal was leaked to the media, and during his post-trade deadline availability, called out Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson for the information going public.

"I'm disappointed that that conversation is public," the then-Maple Leafs GM said. "I've never had that before where these specifics like that have been made public and I think, frankly, it's probably a conversation to ask Kyle Davidson on his availability, in Chicago."

Davidson responded in his own media availability, telling reporters the he'd speak with Dubas privately about the matter.

Toronto made three trades ahead of the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline. They acquired Ilya Lyubushkin and Ryan Dzingel on Feb. 19, 2022, for Nick Ritchie and a conditional second-round pick in 2025.

One day before the deadline, they added Mark Giordano and Colin Blackwell for two second-round picks (2022 and 2023) and a 2024 third-round pick. Following that trade, the Maple Leafs shipped out defenseman Travis Dermott to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2022 third-round pick.

Fleury was traded to the Minnesota Wild that year. Hagel was acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning, who made it to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Colorado Avalanche.
