Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman help dig stuck car out of the Edmonton snow

As everyone who lives in Alberta knows full well, it can snow here for days on end. The weather conditions in this province have even been known to deter prospective free agent signings and cause Edmonton and Calgary to be included on no-trade lists.

Well, it seems as though Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman aren’t particularly afraid of the snow. Over the weekend, the two Canadian boys reportedly leapt into action when they came across a car stuck in a drift on a particularly impassable Edmonton street.

Nugent-Hopkins and Hyman have combined for 58 assists on the ice this season, but they both picked up another one when they got out of their own vehicle to help dislodge the stuck car. Reddit user u/kadamay initially shared the story on Saturday.

“My son’s friend got stuck in the snow tonight,” the user wrote. “Another vehicle stopped to help, and out stepped Nuge and Hyman. Top notch human beings!”

Oilers TV reporter Tony Brar subsequently confirmed the story on his own Twitter account on Sunday night.

The second half of the 2023-24 season has been full of positives for an Oilers team that stumbled out of the gate under their previous head coach. They’re now second in the Pacific Division with a 37-20-2 record through 59 games this season.

Hyman, 31, is the Oilers’ leading goal-scorer, with 42 of them in just 58 games. He’s clicked perfectly with Connor McDavid on the Oilers’ top line and power-play unit, and is under contract for four more years after this one at a $5.5 million cap hit.

Nugent-Hopkins, 30, won’t crack 100 points again this season but is having another fine year, with 55 points in 58 games. He’s on the books through 2029 at a $5.125 million cap hit.

The Oilers are slated to return to action on Tuesday evening when they visit the high-flying Boston Bruins at TD Garden at 5:30 p.m. MT.
