Senators’ Chabot Smashes Stick Into Teammate’s Face On Bench
Nick Turchiaro-USA TODAY Sports

In a move that will go down as a ‘what the hell was he thinking?’ kind of moment, Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot just smashed his stick into the face of his teammate Travis Hamonic while the two were sitting on the bench during the Senators vs. the Nashville Predators. The Senators ended up going on to win the game, but the victory won’t be what most fans are talking about coming out of the contest.

We’ll assume Chabot didn’t know Hamonic was there, but it was an unbelievably careless decision that could have done some serious damage. If Hamonic doesn’t have any kind of concussion or lasting injury, Chabot should consider himself very fortunate.

It’s clear immediately after Chabot nearly decapitated his own defense partner that he regretted losing his mind for a brief moment. Hamonic was obviously hurt and taken aback, but it appeared he was OK. Hopefully, nothing serious comes as a result of this, but if this was a play Chabot had made on the ice to an opponent, it would have resulted in some serious consequences from the NHL Player Safety committee.

An indication of how this season has gone for the Ottawa Senators, no doubt this has been a frustrating year for all involved. What the Senators don’t need are the players accidentally taking each other out while they’re not even on the ice.
