Watch: Alex Ovechkin scores goal No. 786, tying Gordie Howe for most with one team

Future Hall of Famer Alexander Ovechkin hit another milestone in his pursuit of the NHL record for career goals (894), still held by arguably the best player to ever lace up skates, Wayne Gretzky.

On Thursday night, the Washington Capitals' standout registered career goal No. 786, tying Detroit Red Wings all-time great Gordie Howe for the most scored by a player with one franchise.

"It's huge, obviously," Ovechkin said. "I've played my whole career here in Washington. To tie a legend, it's a pretty big number, and it's a cool accomplishment."

Ovechkin's second-period goal Thursday night helped him join Gretzky (402) as the only other player in NHL history to score 400 goals or more on the road.

Through 12 games this season, the 37-year-old has compiled 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists).

Ovechkin sits behind only Howe (801) and Gretzky (894) in goals scored. He's tied with Pittsburgh Penguins All-Star Sidney Crosby for 18th all-time in points with 1,421.
