Who holds the single-game scoring record for every NHL team?

On Saturday afternoon in Arizona, Coyotes right winger Nick Schmaltz became the 45^th player in NHL history to score seven points in a game. He tallied two goals and seven points against the Ottawa Senators. On Jan. 12, 1918, Joe Malone was the first player in NHL history to score seven when he compiled five goals and seven points, also against the Ottawa Senators.

In the 104 years between Malone’s and Schmaltz’s seven-point games, the NHL has evolved significantly, with various rule changes, more games played, larger rosters and now 32 teams.

Seven-point games are rare. The last one was a decade ago when Sam Gagner had an eight-point night with the Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 2, 2012. That night, Gagner tied Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey for most points in a game in Oilers franchise history.

On Saturday, Schmaltz set a new standard for the Coyotes organization, and, considering only 12 players have scored eight points in a game, there is a good chance Schmaltz will forever be etched in Coyotes history.

He was the first Coyotes skater to score six points and then added a seventh for good measure. The Coyotes franchise record was six points, but the four players – Dale Hawerchuk (three times), Alex Steen, Willy Lindstrom and Eddie Olczyk, accomplished the feat in Winnipeg before the franchise relocated to the Desert.

Schmaltz’s spectacular game got me curious to find out the single-game point record for all 32 franchises.

Here is a list of the franchise record for each organization. The most recent player to do it is listed for cases in which multiple players share the record.

ANAHEIM DUCKS

– Five points by six different players: Teemu Selanne (6x), Paul Kariya (4x), Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry (2x), Jason Blake and Dmitri Mironov once.

– Most recent: Getzlaf, Nov. 24, 2015 v. Calgary.

ARIZONA COYOTES/WININPEG JETS

– Seven points. Nick Schmaltz v. Ottawa, March 5, 2022. Four players had six points (all Jets).

BOSTON BRUINS

– Seven points, four players: Phil Esposito, Cam Neely, Bobby Orr and Barry Pederson. All four had 3-4-7. – Most recent: Neely, Oct. 16, 1988 @ Chicago.

BUFFALO SABRES

– Seven points: Gilbert Perreault. Feb. 1, 1976, 2-5-7 @ California Golden Seals

CALGARY FLAMES

–  Seven points: Sergei Makarov. Feb. 25, 1990. 2-5-7 vs. Edmonton.

CAROLINA HURRICANES/HARTFORD WHALERS

– Six points, three players: Ron Francis (2x), Paul Lawless and Eric Staal.

Schmaltz’s performance was amazing and will be difficult to match, not only for a Coyotes player but for any current NHLer.
