NBC adds Snoop Dogg to Summer Olympics coverage

Hoping to bring an irreverent spin to its showcase event, NBC Sports once again is bringing a rap icon to its coverage.

Snoop Dogg will work for NBC during the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, providing commentary, interacting with athletes and touring the sites during the two-plus week event.

In a statement posted on Variety, the rapper and entrepreneur said he's excited about adding his essence to the typically straight-laced presentation.

“I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris. It’s a celebration of skill, dedication, and the pursuit of greatness,” Snoop Dogg said. “We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked.”

No stranger to the sports world, Snoop is rather experienced in both the studio and the broadcast booth for a non-athlete or media figure. For the most part, he's never taken himself too seriously nor has he let the nerves of being around deeply embedded analysts get to him. One prime example is when joined the play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings, providing a ton of comedy along the way. He's been known for unfiltered takes on his favorite teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, on social media for years. 

As for the Olympics, this July won't be Snoop's first time working on the Summer Games with NBC. In 2021 for its streaming platform Peacock, Snoop teamed up with comedian and actor Kevin Hart to provide their own spin on the Tokyo Games, which were delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Without crowds for the events, their commentary more or less acted as a soundtrack for the Games, with many of their segments going viral on social media that summer.

The virality is something that NBC and parent company Comcast wants to take advantage of, as noted by Variety's Brian Steinberg. The veteran media reporter noted that the company plans to show all of the games live on Peacock, a marked changed from decades of relying on tape-delayed broadcasting and the realities of modern media. Snoop will provide a casual fan's perspective for most events while adding immediacy and humor as the games happen.
