David de Gea officially became a free agent at midnight on Friday when his contract with Manchester United expired.

The 32-year-old had signed that contract back in 2019 when he became the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world with a weekly wage in the region of £400,000.

According to The Athletic, De Gea accepted the offer of a new contract on significantly less money earlier this year, but the document was then not signed by the club.

After revoking that offer, United reportedly later submitted another proposal with an even lower salary.

That revised offer is still said to be on the table.

Although De Gea is now out of contract and therefore no longer a United player, his career at Old Trafford may not yet be over.

He could decide to re-sign for the Red Devils but there is also interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

However, De Gea likely has other things on his mind right now because he is getting married to Spanish singer Edurne Garcia this weekend.

De Gea moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and he has made 545 appearances in 12 seasons with United.

The Spain international has won one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one EFL Cup, one Europa League and three Community Shields during those 12 seasons.
