Former Serie A striker German Denis has claimed that Roberto De Zerbi turned down the coaching job at Inter because he is an AC Milan fan and it would not have sat right.

Speaking during an interview with Sportitalia (via Pianeta Milan), Denis revealed that Inter had made an approach to sign De Zerbi as coach last season when Simone Inzaghi appeared to be under immense pressure.

Inter wanted De Zerbi to take over but he turned the job down on account of his loyalty to Milan, the club where he developed as a young player.

“I know for a fact that Roberto De Zerbi said no to Inter because he is a Milan fan. When Simone Inzaghi, last year, was a bit in the balance,” Denis said.

This is of significance as De Zerbi is one of the many coaches being linked with the Milan job, as Stefano Pioli is not expected to stay beyond the end of this season.

De Zerbi has done a very good job at Brighton in the Premier League but the season has slowly deteriorated to a point where it may be best for coach and club if they part ways come the summer.

Inter may be pleased that they stuck with Inzaghi considering they have won the Serie A title at a canter this season, but De Zerbi is a potential option for Milan this summer.
