Barcelona were dealt a major blow to their 2023/24 season when influential young midfielder Gavi picked up a knee injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. Ever since then, they have been linked to a possible move to sign Thiago Alcantara in the January transfer window.

Barcelona’s Links To Thiago Alcantara Clarified

Are Barcelona Going To Re-Sign Thiago?

Fabrizio Romano has opened up about Barcelona’s move for their youth academy graduate and states that he is not aware of any major talks taking place between them and Thiago over a possible winter transfer. He adds that the La Liga heavyweights have been left short-handed in midfield after Gavi’s injury, but that it is still too early to understand if they will sign a replacement or who that will be.

The journalist also adds that “for now” there are no changes or concrete developments regarding how they are planning to act on the possibility of replacing Gavi for this campaign. He also adds that for now, Barcelona’s priority is to register Brazilian striker Vitor Roque into their first team after they beat heavy competition and completed his signing in the summer transfer window.

When it comes to Thiago’s situation, Romano further stated on his CaughtOffside blog: “It’s also worth remembering that Thiago said no to Saudi clubs in July as he wanted to stay at Liverpool. As far as I’m aware there has been no change to his situation since then.”

What Is Going On With Thiago?

The 32-year-old midfielder has not even been able to make a single appearance for Liverpool so far in the 23/24 season after suffering from injury issues over the last few months. He has not been helped by the Reds’ decision to reshuffle their midfield by signing the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in the summer transfer window.

Thiago made 28 appearances for the Premier League club last season, only being able to provide one assist. The Spaniard, a graduate of Barcelona’s youth academy and having also made 100 appearances for their first team, was bought by Liverpool for £20 million in 2020 and has since made 97 appearances for them, scoring three goals and providing six assists across all competitions.
