Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has urged his old club not to take their eye off youth development.

Pardew says improving the academy will be crucial to future success at Newcastle, despite their unlimited transfer spending potential.

"What Newcastle really need to do now is invest in the academy," Pardew told talkSPORT.

"Because that has been poor and it was always poor when I was there. You have got this huge catchment area up there and actually the academy was not producing players.

"When you look at Chelsea, they are going to generate in excess of 100million out of their academy. That is the next part of the model for Eddie (Howe) up there."
