Alan Pulido was shown a straight red card for headbutting Yerson Mosquera during a Leagues Cup game on Monday night.

The incident occurred 29 minutes into Sporting Kansas City's away match at FC Cincinnati.

Kansas striker Pulido, 32, lost the ball to Mosquera, 22, before trying an failing to win it back.

Pulido was then deemed to have fouled Mosquera.

With both players on the ground, Mosquera shoved Pulido with his right hand.

Pulido responded violently by thrusting his forehead into the defender's face.

Referee Daniel Quintero rushed over and had his red card raised in the air just four seconds after Pulido's headbutt.

Pulido did not complain about the referee's decision.

Indeed, he appeared to be remorseful as he waited for Mosquera to get to his feet before offering him a hug, which was accepted.

Kansas were leading 2-0 when Pulido was sent off. The game eventually ended 3-3 before Cincinnati prevailed 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

Pulido - who has represented Mexico 20 times at senior international level - has been a Kansas player since 2020.

Meanwhile, Colombian Mosquera is currently on loan at Cincinnati from Premier League club Wolves.
