Arlington Renegades Coach Bob Stoops Speaks: Training Camp Standouts, QB Room and More
© Raymond Carlin III-USA TODAY Sports

The defending XFL champions are hard at work in training camp as they look to defend the title in a whole new league. Coach Bob Stoops was a big reason for the success of the Arlington Renegades late last season, and he is returning in 2024 for his third season with the team.

Coach Stoops took time to speak to the media on a Zoom call Tuesday to discuss a number of topics, including the quarterbacks on the team, the standout players from training camp, the depth of the offensive line and more.

Here is a look at what Stoops had to say during his presser.

Coach Stoops Comments

Renegades Quarterback Room Evaluation

Sports Illustrated asked Stoops about his evaluation of the three quarterbacks currently on the roster and who would be the starter. Without hesitation, Luis Perez was confirmed to be the starter over Lindsey Scott Jr. and Holton Ahlers.

“Luis is like a coach out there,” Stoops told SI. “They like being in the huddle with him and being on the field with him.”

This doesn’t exclude Scott from being in the offense. SI’s Mike Mitchell asked if he would be featured in certain packages, and Stoops acknowledged that is a possibility as Scott brings a “different pace and style” to his game. While Stoops didn’t dive too deep into how Scott could be used, it appears he will be part of the gameplan in some compacity.

Stoops spoke highly of all three quarterbacks, asserting that while they all bring something different to the table, “I feel like we can win with them all.”

Offensive Line Getting Stronger in Year Two

Arlington’s offensive line took a hit earlier in training camp with the loss of starting tackle Garrett McGhin, who suffered a torn meniscus. Even with McGhin, Stoops was high on the offensive line, calling out players like Adrian Ealy, Bobby Evans, Marcus Minor and Cameron Hunt as standouts in camp. Stoops is confident with the depth of the line and believes it remains one of the best in the UFL.

Training Camp Standouts

While there have been plenty of standouts from camp, Stoops singled out a few skill players specifically. Wide receiver Isaiah Winstead was the pass catcher that caught the eye of Stoops. Other standouts come from the backfield, with Stoops pointing out how nicely Dae Dae Hunter and Devin Darrington complement the running back room with Renegade veterans De’Veon Smith and Leddie Brown.

Coming Up for Training Camp

The Renegades recently had a joint practice with the Houston Roughnecks, which was a positive experience for Stoops and Houston head coach Curtis Johnson. A joint practice between the two teams will occur again on Thursday, two weeks before the teams open the inaugural season with a March 30 showdown.
