Logan Paul is looking toward the head of the table

Logan Paul is the WWE United States champion. He retained his title against Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble. However, that victory wasn't without controversy.

Owens was disqualified for the use of brass knuckles that had originally been intended for Paul to use. Nevertheless, a win is a win, and Paul remains the champion.

Speaking on a recent episode of the "IMPAULSIVE" podcast, Paul began looking toward the future.

“I had a taxing day yesterday,” Paul said. “Kevin Owens is better than I thought. He’s good, he’s very good...I’m in a little bit of pain. I did retain my title against all odds for the first time in WWE. That’s the Royal Rumble, and that’s all it takes. One title defense at a time. Who knows, at this rate, I could be the next Roman Reigns."

It wasn't quite the nod toward "the head of the table" we saw from The Rock, but Paul has his sights set on big things in the WWE.

Still, at this stage of his young wrestling career, he isn't ready to face Roman Reigns. There are still detractors within the fan base. Some believe Paul is there due to his social media fame, not his wrestling ability.

Fast-tracking Paul into a main event against Reigns would be ill-advised for the WWE. He hasn't earned the opportunity. He isn't a legend within the company. And there's no telling how the fans would react.

Instead, Paul needs to continue building a body of work. The more title defenses he stacks, the more believable a potential Universal Championship match would become.

That tile would suit Paul, though. He isn't a fighting champion. He isn't in the ring every week. He could easily assume the role we currently see from Reigns, cutting promos, making video appearances and defending the belt at Premium Live Events.

Paul has the following and notoriety to fill the void Reigns will eventually leave. Reigns isn't leaving anytime soon, though. And he won't be the champion when he finally does.

Paul has a lot of work to do if he wants to be held in the same regard as the "Tribal Chief." For now, he just needs to prove he's more than a gimmick act that's receiving a big push from within the company.
