To become the Universal Champion, Reigns defeated Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt in a triple threat match at the 2020 WWE Payback. As Universal Champion, he beat Daniel Bryan, Edge, Kevin Owens, Jey Uso, Rey Mysterio, Cesaro, Finn Balor, John Cena, Goldberg, Sami Zayn, Matt Riddle, and others.

Reigns beat Brock Lesnar to unify the WWE Universal Championship with the WWE Championship to become the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion last year at WrestleMania 38.
